Neuralink, the innovative brain-chip startup founded by Elon Musk, has successfully implanted its device in a second patient. This device aims to provide paralyzed individuals with the ability to operate digital devices through thought alone. Musk disclosed the success of the second implant during an extensive eight-hour podcast with Lex Fridman. While he provided limited details about the new participant, he noted that the patient, like the first, suffered a spinal cord injury. The second implant features 400 working electrodes out of the 1,024 it is designed to use, a promising indicator of the device’s effectiveness.
“I don’t want to jinx it but it seems to have gone extremely well with the second implant,” Musk stated on the podcast. “There’s a lot of signal, a lot of electrodes. It’s working very well.”

The first patient, Noland Arbaugh, also joined the podcast to share his experiences with the Neuralink implant. Arbaugh, who was paralyzed in a diving accident, received his implant in January. Before the surgery, he relied on a stick held in his mouth to interact with a tablet device. Post-implant, Arbaugh can control a computer cursor and engage with digital platforms simply by thinking about the desired actions.
Arbaugh’s initial experience with the implant faced challenges when the tiny wires retracted, significantly reducing the number of functional electrodes. Neuralink addressed this by tweaking the algorithm to enhance sensitivity, restoring the device’s ability to monitor brain signals. Despite these early hurdles, Arbaugh has broken his previous world record for the speed of cursor control using thought alone, even with only about 10-15% of the electrodes functioning optimally.

Musk revealed that Neuralink plans to extend its clinical trials to eight more patients this year, aiming to gather more data and refine the technology.
