On August 1st, the Japanese Olympic team competing in the Paris Olympics released a statement addressing the slander directed at athletes via social networking sites. The statement emphasized the emotional impact of such negative comments, saying, “We are hurt by thoughtless slander and criticism, and it can make us feel anxious and scared.” The team further declared, “We will consider reporting any insults or threats that go too far to the police and taking legal action.”
The team also urged the public to be mindful of their online etiquette when posting on social media and other platforms.
Ayane Yanai, a member of the Ritsumeikan University team, highlighted the issue by expressing her distress over harsh comments after she announced her withdrawal from the individual race walking events to focus on the mixed team event. Similarly, Uta Abe of Park 24 faced criticism for her emotional reaction after losing in the women’s 52 kg judo competition, which has also drawn attention to the problem.
The Japanese Olympic team’s statement calls for greater respect and consideration on social media, stressing the importance of supportive and positive interactions, especially during such a significant international event.
